SUGGESTIONS:

Health, Magicka & Stamina

HEALTH:

All humanoid NPCs have a locked 100HP, which is effectively boosted by armour (refer COMBAT).

MAGICKA:

All special abilities, including spells, discharge as the player uses them and individually have a “cool-down” period. Some spells slowly deplete as the player holds the spell. Some have multiple uses until depleted, while others are exhausted with one press of the button. This cool-down period is shortened by increasing Intellect and the various schools of magic, activating certain perks and recharging magicka from the player’s reserve. More powerful, demanding spells naturally have longer cool-down periods.

That being said, the player may use any and all other spells while the exhausted spell is recharging. So instead of one communal magicka pool, the player can rotate spells quickly, encouraging free-flowing combat.

RESERVES:

Rather than hauling numerous health, magicka and stamina potions around in the inventory, the player has reserves in health, magicka and stamina that are replenished with the addition of select tonics and food. For example: a Sweet Roll will replenish the player’s stamina reserve by 25 points, and a medium Health Tonic will replenish the player’s health reserve by 50 points. These reserves are limited and increase with the player’s level.

By holding down the B button, the player draws from the health, magicka or stamina reserve, allowing for quick and convenient recovery in battle. The player will immediately consume collected items should the relevant reserve be full.

STAMINA:

Stamina increases with "Warrior” and some “Rogue” class skills, and by movement (especially under load), swimming, taking frost spell damage and enduring hot climates. A fit NPC will enjoy the following benefits:

  • More Stamina points and quicker recovery, giving the player an edge in combat or when fleeing.

  • The player's improved metabolism provides additional resistance to poisons and disease.

  • Special abilities (not magic spells) have a shorter cool-down period.

Stamina is drained and subsequently recovered in two ways, through short-term and long-term activities. Sprinting and leaping around until your lungs give out drains stamina quickly (visible as a green bar), but it will also recover quickly within the framework of the player's maximum stamina (visible as a darker green bar). Long-term activities, such as sustained combat and movement without sleep, deplete your maximum stamina over time (if the player has no active 'rested' bonus). This limits sprinting, power blows and dodges. Drained stamina is restored by the consumption of food, but depleted maximum stamina can only be restored with rest. This creates the notion that the player can become exhausted over time.
